want to build a mountain bike for the streets and lite trail riding from scratch dont know where to start ?

I want to build a moutain bike from scratch and i want it geared for the pavement and also winter riding on the streets but i dont know where to start .. is there a recipe out there a few sites with all the parts i would need any recommendations are welcome

I would suggest a Cyclocross bike for that. Good for streets, can use smaller road tires on the same 700C rims.
Great for trail riding, and some XC that is not to extreme, with Cyclocross tires.
