Giro Remedy and Giro Athlon Mountain Bike Helmets.
Giro Remedy
In this article, I would like to look at another 2 great Giro mountain bike helmets – the Giro Remedy and the Giro Athlon.
As you know, I am a really big fan of Giro cycling helmets. They are sturdy, lightweight, look great and give you tons of protection.
If you require that extra bit of protection, the Giro Remedy is the one to go for.
Now, how’s it made? Well, the outer part of the helmet is made with hand-layered fibreglass. Its lining can be removed and washed. Keeps it smelling fresh.
At first glance, I thought the helmet looked hot and heavy, but it’s definitely anything but. It has 14 mesh-covered vents, and these keep your head really nice and cool, even in the most strenuous conditions. They let the fresh air in, and any warm air out.
This is also a vent at the back of the helmet. This vent is covered to give you a bit of extra protection against flying debris.
Another good safety feature is the high chin bar. This chin bar is EVA-lined, and the clip strap keeps everything where it should be.
And don’t worry, your goggles won’t be a problem with this helmet. Because of the wide design, they will fit in easily.
The visor is a bolt-on, 3-position job. You can adjust this quite easily without needing tools.
The weight is approx 1050g, which isn’t bad at all.
As you would expect, it meets the CE EN1078 standard and the ASTM 1952 standard for downhill use.
All in all, a great, cool-looking helmet that offers all-round protection. I really like this one.
The sizes are:
Small: 51-55cm;
Medium: 55-59cm;
Large: 59-63cm.
And finally, it comes at a pretty good price. Definitely worth having a look at.
Giro Athlon
The Giro Athlon is another nice piece of gear.
It has a low-profile visor (or peak, depending on where you live) that weighs 19g. The whole helmet, by the way, weighs around 312 g. The visor offers a bit of protection against the sun and the usual splatter, although I have to say, not to any great extent.
When I look at this helmet, I see a combination of the Giro Atmos and the Giro Xen helmets.
It has an ICS composite sub-frame, with X-static fabric on the inside.
It also has the superb ROC LOC 5 system. This is so much better than its predecessor, the ROC LOC 4 system. For a start, it is reported to be up 40% lighter. The ROC LOC 5 system make it child’s play to adjust for fit tension, and also to adjust the vertical position. A finger and thumb on the micro-dial, and that’s it. Done! This can be done on the fly, which means that you can adjust it to fit tighter when charging over rougher ground, and then slacken it up a bit when on a flatter surface.
It also has 23 of Giro’s trademark Wind Tunnel vents – great for keeping the head cool, even on the hottest of rides.
If you don’t like the Giro logos on the helmet, you can easily remove them as they are just stickers. The main graphics, however, are integrated into the shell cover.
The buckle on the helmet is pretty basic – it is just a straight-forward quick release buckle, and the excess strap is held by a standard rubber O-ring.
This helmet has quite a simple look, but it is highly effective. Great ventilation, light, tough and reasonably priced – it is cheaper than the Giro Ionos and the Giro Atmos.
