The Painting $3.95 In 1869 Japan, a young woman escapes the confines of her arranged marriage by painting memories of her lover on mulberry paper. She secretly wraps the painting around a ceramic pot that’s bound for Europe. In France, a disenchanted young man works as a clerk at an import shop. When he opens the box from Japan, he discovers the brilliant watercolor of two lovers locked in an embrace under a plum tree. He steals the painting and hides it in his room. With each viewing, he sees something different, and gradually the painting transforms him. Set outside the new capital of Tokyo during the Meiji Restoration and in Paris during the Franco-Prussian War, "The Painting" is a richly imagined story of four characters whose lives are delicately and powerfully entwined: Ayoshi, the painter, pines for her lover as she dutifully attends to her husband; Ayoshi’s husband, Hayashi, a government official who’s been disfigured in a deadly fire, has his own well of secret yearnings; Jorgen, wounded by the war and by life, buries himself in work at the Paris shop; and the shop owner’s sister, Natalia, who shows Jorgen the true message of the painting. Exquisitely written and utterly spellbinding, "The Painting" reveals the enduring effect of art in ordinary life and marks the debut of a skilled stylist and first-rate storyteller. |

On Painting $9.89 Artist, architect, poet and philosopher, Leon Battista Alberti revolutionized the history of art with his theories of perspective in On Painting (1435). Inspired by the order and beauty inherent in nature, his groundbreaking work sets out the principles of distance, dimension and proportion; instructs the painter on how to use the rules of composition, representation, light and colour to create work that is graceful and pleasing to the eye; and stipulates the moral and artistic pre-requisites of the successful painter. On Painting had an immediate and profound influence on Italian Renaissance artists including Ghiberti, Fra Angelico and Veneziano and on later figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, and remains a compelling theory of art. |

Excerpt: ” Apolinère Enameled ” was painted circa 1916 by Marcel Duchamp , as an advertisement for paint. The picture depicts a girl painting a bed-frame with white enamelled paint. The depiction of the frame deliberately includes conflicting perspective lines, to produce an impossible object . To emphasise the deliberate impossibility of the shape, a piece of the frame is missing. The pieces is sometimes referred to as Duchamp’s “impossible bed” painting. In 1913 at his Paris studio he mounted the bicycle wheel upside down onto a stool, spinning it occasionally just to watch it. Later he denied that its creation was purposeful, though it has come to be known as the first of his readymades . “I enjoyed looking at it,” he said. “Just as I enjoy looking at the flames dancing in the fireplace.” It was not until he began making readymades a few years later in New York that he decided Bicycle Wheel was a readymade. The original from 1913 was lost, and Duchamp recreated the sculpture in 1951. Bicycle Wheel is said to be the first kinetic sculpture . Real Winners Don’t Quit $24.95 Real Winners Don’t Quit shares the adventures and life lessons of a man who lived Henry David Thoreau’s words, ” . . . perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.” In 1967, Joe Bowen began a remarkable journey on a bicycle to discover America for himself. At the time, there had been crossings of America on a bicycle but it was unheard of to travel 14,000 miles and 16 months on a bicycle! He left Lompoc, California with a meager $43.85 in his pocket. Whenever he ran out of funds he worked a few days painting a house, putting up hay on a farm or cutting firewood. In 1980, Joe wanted to raise a substantial sum of money for his favorite charity, the Muscular Dystrophy Association. With the help of his fellow Jaycees, his 3,008-mile stiltwalk across America set a world record and raised more than $100,000 for the MDA. He stiltwalked in spite of his critics. In 2005-2006, at the age of 62, Joe again bicycled 14,000 miles throughout North America. This time he did it as Kentucky’s Unbridled Spirit. He took 8,000 elementary children from Eastern Kentucky along with him. Joe was able to correspond with the children by telephone and a laptop computer that he learned to use during the first 1,500 miles of the trip.Joe retired from a career as a construction worker after working his way up to working foreman. He completed these journeys of a lifetime, raised a family of three girls and raised more than $600,000 for his favorite charities even though he had to overcome many challenges along the way. It has been said that “he is an average Joe made unique by believing in the power within himself and of the human spirit.”Joe lives in a beautiful home in the woods that he and hiswife built out of the lumber they salvaged from 150-year-old houses which had been abandoned and given to Joe.Joe understands the title of this book because he never, never, never gives up! |

Yoko Ono $45 In 1965, The New York Times called Tokyo-born, New York-based Fluxus artist Yoko Ono a one person culture explosion. In this generous volume, Ono presents instruction pieces from 1961 to the present, including three scores from her iconic 1964 artist’’s book, Grapefruit — Drinking Piece for Orchestra, Bicycle Piece for Orchestra and Painting to Be Slept On –which are republished here for the first time. Ono has explained the origin of these works: .. .sometimes for financial reasons, sometimes for technical difficulties, I could never realize all the ideas which were literally bombarding me. But now, I could just write instructions. It freed me. Also included are more than 100 drawings from Franklin Summer, a series begun in 1994, comprising 1,400 inkblot drawings on paper, and Vertical Memory (1997)–dedicated to Ono’’s father–a photograph in 21 parts depicting a distorted face. The piece, which Ono considers her best, is a culmination of her life’’s work. |
