What should I look for in cycling shorts and helmet?

I just recently got into cycling with an old road bike of my cousins and I have been recently looking into the apparel.

I know I need shorts with padding (I am very skinny/boney). But I don’t know which brands/features to look for.

Also, is there anything special I should look for in a helmet?

One last note: If anyone knows of any good sites (good prices) to obtain these two items please let me know. Thanks!

Look for good padding and strong stitching in the shorts and the helmet has to come up to safety standards.
