Oak Park Prius drivers can now shop using Toyota’s mLot app

The rate at which technology is progressing is astounding. And now, we’re seeing more and more integration between different technologies, with the convergence of technology platforms leading the way. The tech powers that be have crafted plenty of fun little toys for us mere mortals over the past ten years, but perhaps none have been as titillating as what’s coming out of the auto market. Oak Park Prius dealers are leading the charge as the 21st century just begins to get underway, and could you guess who else is behind the shift? Yes, of course, it’s Steve Jobs’ little pet project: Apple.

These days, it seems like the battle between Apple and Facebook is starting to get out of control. Then again, Facebook doesn’t seem to have an application with real world uses yet. I don’t mean real world exactly; I mean the physical world, the three dimensional plane around which we’re currently rotating. Developers over at Toyota have tooled together an application that’s about to change the way drivers – specifically Toyota fanatics – do their car shopping. You’ll be able to see it in action soon at your new and used Oak Park Toyota dealer.

Oak Park Prius fanatics are excited that the new mLot shopping tool app is about to break the mold on car shopping. Essentially, the application reads the model of the car based either on its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or its shape as interpreted by your iPhone camera. This application can be used on a Toyota you see driving down the street the same way you’ll use it to share cars in the lot with your friends via Facebook.

But sharing isn’t the only fun extra; you can literally post cars to your own personal queue to investigate further at a later time. Your Oak Park used Toyota dealer is excited to see the first person using the tool at their location. Let’s be honest: people use their iPhones for just about anything. This is simply another addition to your list, and Oak Park Prius drivers are sure to make great use of the tool.

The recent press release detailed even more information for your Oak Park used Toyota dealer, a curious party to this new and awesome marketing effort. According to the press release, “After downloading the Toyota Shopping Tool App for iPhone and Android mobile devices, with a version for BlackBerry devices launching shortly hereafter, users are able to use the all-new mLot™ tool to get instant vehicle information by either taking a picture of or typing in the VIN for a specific vehicle. The feature gives users the option to save the vehicle as a favorite, share favorites with friends via Facebook or e-mail, review key features, append photos and notes, request a quote and compare their favorites to see how they measure up against each other. Most importantly, mLot™ offers consumers the ability to shop for a Toyota vehicle anywhere at any time.” Great stuff out of Toyota. Great stuff.

Building Wireless Community Networks

Building Wireless Community Networks

$34.99

“Building Wireless Community Networks” is about getting people online using wireless network technology. The 802.11b standard (also known as WiFi) makes it possible to network towns, schools, neighborhoods, small business, and almost any kind of organization. All that’s required is a willingness to cooperate and share resources. The first edition of this book helped thousands of people engage in community networking activities. At the time, it was impossible to predict how quickly and thoroughly WiFi would penetrate the marketplace. Today, with WiFi-enabled computers almost as common as Ethernet, it makes even more sense to take the next step and network your community using nothing but freely available radio spectrum. This book has showed many people how to make their network available, even from the park bench, how to extend high-speed Internet access into the many areas not served by DSL and cable providers, and how to build working communities and a shared though intangible network. All that’s required to create an access point for high-speed Internet connection is a gateway or base station. Once that is set up, any computer with a wireless card can log onto the network and share its resources. Rob Flickenger built such a network in northern California, and continues to participate in network-building efforts. His nuts-and-bolts guide covers: Selecting the appropriate equipment Finding antenna sites, and building and installing antennas Protecting your network from inappropriate access New network monitoring tools and techniques (new) Regulations affecting wireless deployment (new) IP network administration, including DNS and IP Tunneling (new)Hisexpertise, as well as his sense of humor and enthusiasm for the topic, makes “Building Wireless Community Networks” a very useful and readable book for anyone interested in wireless connectivity.

Charting the World: Geography and Maps from Cave Paintings to GPS with 21 Activities

Charting the World: Geography and Maps from Cave Paintings to GPS with 21 Activities

$11.95

As soon as early humans began to scratch images on cave walls, they began to create maps. And while these first drawings were used to find hunting grounds or avoid danger, they later developed into far more complex navigational tools. Charting the World tells the fascinating history of maps and mapmaking, navigators and explorers, and the ways that technology has enhanced our ability to understand the world around us. Richly illustrated with full-color maps and diagrams, it gives children an in-depth appreciation of geographical concepts and principles and shows them how to unlock the wealth of information maps contain. It also features 21 hands-on activities for readers to put their new skills to the test. Children will: build a three-dimensional island model using a contour map, engrave a simple map on an aluminum “printing plate,” determine the elevation of hills in their neighborhood, draw a treasure map and have a friend search for the hidden stash, create a nautical chart of a small puddle, survey their backyard or local park, navigate a course using a compass, and much more. Now more than ever, the study of geography is crucial to understanding our ever-changing planet, from political change and warfare to environmental conservation and population growth.

Often, the level of support received depends on whether or not the goals and importance of the program have been clearly explained to the public, the press, or policymakers. Without good communication, even the best programs are liable to fail.
Communication Skills for Conservation Professionals provides in-depth guidance on achieving conservation goals through better communications. It introduces communication approaches-marketing and mass media, citizen participation, public information, environmental interpretation, and conservation education activities-and offers scores of real-world examples and straightforward advice that will help conservationists develop the the skills they need to communicate effectively. Following an introductory chapter that provides an overview of the communication process, the book:

describes research techniques for gathering background information and targeting audiences
outlines the steps involved in developing a communications campaign
explains how to use mass media-from giving interviews to writing news releases and holding press conferences
provides examples for developing interpretive media for conservation
explores long-term conservation education strategies
presents program evaluation techniques to determine the level of success achieved, or to identify steps for improvemen.

Throughout, the author presents a rich storehouse of examples, guidelines, and planning tools for all kinds of communication challenges. Strategies and materials that have been used by organizations across the country-from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to The Nature Conservancy, from Adirondack Park to Yellowstone National Park-are featured, providing both inspiration and support for others involved with similar projects.
Communication Skills for Conservation

Designing Field Studies for Biodiversity Conservation

Designing Field Studies for Biodiversity Conservation

$40

Anyone working in biodiversity conservation or field ecology should understand and utilize the common-sense process of scientific inquiry: observing surroundings, framing questions, answering those questions through well-designed studies, and, in many cases, applying results to decision making. Yet the interdisciplinary nature of conservation means that many workers are not well versed in the methods of science and may misunderstand or mistrust this indispensable tool.
Designing Field Studies for Biodiversity Conservation addresses that problem by offering a comprehensible, practical guide to using scientific inquiry in conservation work. In an engaging and accessible style, award-winning tropical ecologist and teacher Peter Feinsinger melds concepts, methods, and intellectual tools into a unique approach to answering environmental questions through field studies. Focusing on the fundamentals of common sense, independent thinking, and natural history, he considers:

framing the question and designing the study
interpreting and applying results through judicious use of statistical inference
taking into account the natural history of plants, animals, and landscapes
monitoring and assessing progress through approaches such as “bioindicator species” or “species diversity measures”
helping other interested parties (park guards, local communities, school teachers) use scientific inquiry in addressing their own concerns

Detailed appendixes explain technical issues, while numerous sidebars and illustrations provide important background and thought-provoking exercises. Throughout, the author challenges the reader to integrate conceptual thinking with on-the-ground practice in order to make conservation truly effective. Feinsinger concentrates on examples from Latin America but stresses that the approach applies to local conservation concerns or field biology questions in any landscape.
Designing Field

Dorie

Dorie

$26

Before the Great Smoky Mountains became a national park, the region was a lush wilderness dotted with isolated farms. Into this land of unspoiled beauty, Dorie Woodruff Cope was born in 1899. In this evocative memoir, Dorie’s daughter, Florence Cope Bush, traces a life at once extraordinary and yet typical of the many Appalachian farm families forced to leave their simple mountain homes for the cities, abandoning traditional ways for those born of progress . Dorie’s story begins with her childhood on an isolated mountain farm, where we see first-hand how her parents combined back-breaking labor with intense personal pride to produce everything their family needed–from food and clothing to tools and toys–from the land. Lumber companies began to invade the mountains, and Dorie’s family took advantage of the financial opportunities offered by the lumber industry, not realizing that in giving up their lands they were also letting go of a way of life. Along with their machinery, the lumber companies brought in many young men, one of whom, Fred Cope, became Dorie’s husband. After the lumber companies stripped the mountains of their timber, outsiders set the area aside as a national park, requiring Dorie, now married with a family of her own, to move outside of her beloved mountains. Through Dorie’s eyes, we see how the mountain farmers were forced to abandon their beloved rural life-style and customs and assimilate into cities like Knoxville, Tennessee. Her experiences were shared by hundreds of Appalachians during the early twentieth century. However, Dorie’s perseverance, strength of character, and deep love of the Smokies make this a unique and moving narrative.

Edison's Electric Light: The Art of Invention

Edison’s Electric Light: The Art of Invention

$30

In September 1878, Thomas Alva Edison brashly—and prematurely—proclaimed his breakthrough invention of a workable electric light. That announcement was followed by many months of intense experimentation that led to the successful completion of his Pearl Street station four years later. Edison was not alone—nor was he first—in developing an incandescent light bulb, but his was the most successful of all competing inventions. Drawing from the documents in the Edison archives, Robert Friedel and Paul Israel explain how this came to be. They explore the process of invention through the Menlo Park notes, discussing the full range of experiments, including the testing of a host of materials, the development of such crucial tools as the world’s best vacuum pump, and the construction of the first large-scale electrical generators and power distribution systems. The result is a fascinating story of excitement, risk, and competition.Revised and updated from the original 1986 edition, this definitive study of the most famous invention of America’s most famous inventor is completely keyed to the printed and electronic versions of the Edison Papers, inviting the reader to explore further the remarkable original sources.

Environmental Science: Problems, Connections and Solutions

Environmental Science: Problems, Connections and Solutions

$162.95

Environmental issues affect every part of your life. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE: WORKING WITH THE EARTH, Twelfth Edition, shows you how nature works, how we interact with it, and how we have sustained—and can continue to sustain—our relationship with the earth by applying nature’s lessons to our economies and individual lifestyles. This central theme of sustainability—the ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions—is clarified by an emphasis on natural capital (resources) and degradation, solutions, trade-offs, and the importance of individuals. If you have little or no science background, the book provides you with a solid grounding in the basics that will help you better understand environmental science concepts. Case studies—on topics ranging from the importance of insects to the reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone Park to the world of nanotechnology—illustrate key topics and issues that affect your life. These cases inspire How Would You Vote? questions, which sharpen your critical thinking by asking you to consider facts, conflicting solutions, and trade-offs surrounding the issues, and then cast your vote. Multimedia resources offer other ways to learn. CengageNOW features Personalized Study Plans and interactive exercises and animations that help you master concepts. MP3 audio study tools can be included with your text at your instructor’s request, or can be purchased separately through www.iChapters.com. There’s an eBook too, which is available for purchase.
